Neuroarchitecture extends this insight to the design of built spaces. Features such as lighting, layout, openness, and access to views can influence stress, orientation, and cognitive ease. The brain does not merely register a room; it interprets a room as navigable, inviting, threatening, or effortful. This is one reason design quality matters for human functioning.

Personality and Geography
Recent research has found associations between environmental features and personality patterns across regions. In one large U.S. study, urban areas were associated with higher openness and lower conscientiousness, while coastal areas were associated with higher openness, higher neuroticism, and lower conscientiousness and agreeableness (Militaru et al., 2023). These are not proof of direct causation, but they are strong evidence that place and personality cluster together in meaningful ways.
The most plausible explanation is a combination of selection and influence. People tend to move toward places that fit their preferences, and then those places shape them further through repeated exposure to local norms. Urban areas may reward novelty, complexity tolerance, and fast adaptation, which fits openness. Coastal areas may attract people who value flexibility, exploration, or less conventional lifestyles, which can also align with openness. Lower conscientiousness in these settings may reflect the fact that fast-paced or highly variable environments often reward adaptation more than rigid routine.

Organizational Science
Organizational science shows the same principle in the workplace. Office conditions such as daylight, air quality, temperature, noise, and spatial layout affect well-being, concentration, and productivity. These are not minor conveniences. They shape the likelihood that employees can sustain attention, collaborate well, and manage fatigue.
Natural light is one of the clearest examples. Access to windows and daylight is associated with better mood, higher satisfaction, and stronger perceptions of teamwork. This is important because it demonstrates how a seemingly small environmental feature can influence both feeling and performance. In organizational settings, environment is therefore part of the infrastructure of achievement.
Research on personal growth in organizations also supports this conclusion. Ganti et al. (2024) reviewed 292 articles and argued that personal growth at work is shaped by organizational conditions, not only by individual traits or intentions. The research reviewed here supports a simple but important conclusion: environments help shape human development by structuring attention, emotion, social learning, and opportunity. They do not erase agency, but they strongly influence the kinds of habits and identities that are easiest to build. To understand how people become who they are, we must also understand the places in which they live, work, and grow.
